London Jazz Festival 2012If jazz is dead, someone forgot to tell the thousands of performers and fans who flock to the annual London Jazz Festival. Celebrating its 20th anniversary the 10-day festival returns to the capital with a flamboyant programme which reflects the diverse roots of our great city. Among the line-up for this year are Herbie Hancock who plays his first solo in the UK; Macy Gray who is joined by saxophone virtuoso David Murray and a 15-piece big band; and Marcus Roberts who sets up shop at Kings Place for four three days with the Guildhall Jazz Band. There are also tributes to sixties musician Michael Garrick and Jamaican jazz genius Joe Harriott, both at the Southbank Centre's Purcell Room. The many Southbank Centre venues lead the way, but there will be shows (more than 250 of them!) throughout London, including old favourites the Royal Albert Hall and the Barbican Centre, jazz stalwarts Ronnie Scott's and 606 Club, The Forge and Artsdepot; and even some restaurants. The organisers habitually attract some top rare performers and blend them together with both newcomers and mainstays of the British jazz scene - from stars of the American jazz tradition to key players of the European scene and free musical thinkers.
