The London Mandolin Festival returns to Holborn's St Supulchre-without-Newgate for a second outing following the success of its inaugural gathering last year. Uniting voluntary plucked string players from all over London into one mass orchestra to showcase the range and beauty of classical music for mandolins, these two concerts on Sunday afternoon and evening should cover an array of styles including folk, klezmer, contemporary, Japanese and Cuban. The theme for the festival this year is "Rumba: Rhythm & Dance" and the Hispanic party music is featured in four of the six orchestral pieces performed. In today's day and age, the mandolin is almost becoming a dying art - despite the universal appeal of the instrument championed by Captain Corelli. Nowadays it is most pivotal in the American bluegrass music movement, although it was a mainstay in the Baroque orchestras of yesteryear. Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones is an accomplished player while the catchy riff on R.E.M.'s 'Losing My Religion' is famously played on a mandolin. Dating back to 1137, St Sepulchre's is the largest parish church in the centre of London. Nowadays, St. Sepulchre's is best known as the National Musicians' Church. With its own excellent and thriving musical tradition, St. Sepulchre's also has links to many music colleges and institutions, and provides an important venue for musical events and a centre for musicians.
