The London 2012 Fencing competition features 10 medal events and three different types of sword during its run from Saturday 28 July to Sunday 5 August at the ExCeL Centre in the River Zone. Since its proper inception as an Olympic sport in the late 19th century, Fencing has grown in stature and it is the only sport to have features at every modern Summer Games. It's more than a couple of people dressed in white, wearing a metal grill and fighting with swords. For starters, there are three different types of sword: the light Foil and the heavier Epee both see points scored with the tip of the weapon, while the thrusting Sabre can pick up points with its edge as well as tip, although no double touches are allowed. What's more, both the Foil and Sabre have rules of the 'right of way', whereas the Epee event allows both fencers to score points at the same time. There are Individual and Team events for all three swords, although in the men's competition there is no Epee Team event, and in the women's there is no Sabre Team event. Italy and France are the most successful Fencing nations, with the French boasting a total of 115 Olympic medals to Italy's 114, but the Italians leading the gold medal count by four, on 45.
