The London 2012 Olympic Football programme actually gets underway two days before the London 2012 Opening Ceremony, with the Preliminary Rounds starting apace on Wednesday 25 July. The big kick-off comes at Cardiff's Millenium Stadium, which hosts two matches on the opening day, including the first piece of London 2012 Olympic action. The final of both the men's and women's Football competitions will be held at Wembley Stadium, the home of English football, on Thursday 9 August (women's) and Saturday 11 August (men's). Other UK stadia being used are the City of Coventry Stadium (Coventry), Hampden Park (Glasgow), Old Trafford (Manchester) and St James' Park (Newcastle). Wembley will host three preliminary matches (Sunday 29 and Tuesday 31 July, Wednesday 1 August), one quarter-final (Saturday 4 August) and two semi-finals (Monday 6 and Tuesday 7 August) before the gold medal games. At London 2012, the men's competition will be an under-23s event, although each country will be allowed to include three older players in their team (David Beckham, an ambassador to the London 2012 bid, has already stated his desire to play). There are no age restrictions for the women's competition.
