The new Hockey Centre in the Olympic Park will host the London 2012 Hockey competition from Sunday 29 July to Saturday 11 August as 12 teams in both the men's and women's event do battle with their sticks in a bid to seal gold. Hockey is one of the fastest team sports at the Olympics - and the modern-day water-based synthetic-turf pitches make the game all the more speedy and skillful. It's a non-contact sport, but things do get pretty physical, with sticks swinging and the hard ball often undercut and smacked through the air towards the goal. It's more complicated than football-with-sticks, with goals having to be scored from within the shooting circle - and a whole raft of other rules, such as no foot-to-ball contact. With the exception of the 1912 Games, Hockey has been on the Olympic programme since 1908, with India notching up twice as many golds in their history as any of its opponents.

About Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre

From May 2014, London 2012's Hockey Centre becomes the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre. The first rate facilities include two hockey pitches within a 3,000-seat hockey stadium which can increase capacity to 15,000 for major events. There are four indoor tennis courts and six outdoor courts, available to the public throughout the day and evening, all year round, and a £30 million clubhouse with changing rooms, bar and seating areas.
