Almost 1,000 athletes will take to the water during the London 2012 Olympics Swimming programme - which takes place predominantly in the new state-of-the-art Aquatics Centre but also in the historic Serpentine Lake in central London's beautiful Hyde Park. Swimming at the Summer Games remains one of the most popular sports for spectators - which is precisely why two bulky temporary stands have been added on to the slick Aquatics Centre, so that 17,500 people can squeeze in to watch the 30-odd medal events that take place from Saturday 28 July to Saturday 4 August. For those who can't pick up a ticket for the indoor events, there's always the Marathon Swimming 10km event in Hyde Park on Thursday 9 and Friday 10 August. For the 50m pool events, it's pretty simple: there are four strokes - freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly - raced at various distances; all four strokes are then used in the Individual Medley and Medley Relay events. Swimming is one of those sports where world records seem to keep on tumbling - and with the return from retirement of the five-time Olympic gold medallist Ian Thorpe, and his renewed rivalry with Michael Phelps, who has notched 16 Olympic medals to date, Swimming looks certain to continue wowing the crowds at London 2012.
