One of the most beautiful and graceful sports on the Olympic schedule is Synchronised Swimming, which comes to the Aquatics Centre in the Olympic Park between Sunday 5 and Friday 10 August. Requiring extraordinary athletic ability, stamina, endurance, flexibility, breath control and technical grace, Synchronised Swimming is akin to ballet but with the added pressure of performing in water. There are two medal events, with athletes performing both free and technical routines in pairs (duets) and in teams of eight. Short routines are performed to a musical accompaniment while judges take into consideration a whole host of factors, such as choreography, difficulty and execution. Synchronised Swimming has been an Olympic sport since the Los Angeles 1984 Games, and while Japan have notched the most medals - 12 in total - none of those have been gold, the leading holder of which is Russia, with six. Along with Rhythmic Gymnastics, Synchronised Swimming is one of two Olympic sports that are contested only by women.
About Aquatics Centre
The iconic wave-shaped Aquatics Centre designed by Iraq-born architect Zaha Hadid for the London 2012 Olympics reopens in 2014 for public use as a leisure faculty for local and elite swimmers, complete with creche, family-friendly changing facilities, a cafe and a new public plaza.
