Blending speed, endurance and teamwork, the 10 Olympic Track Cycling events (five for men, five for women) take place at the state-of-the-art Velodrome between Thursday 2 and Tuesday 7 August. The pressure will be firmly on the shoulders of Team GB, who won seven of the 10 gold medals on offer at the Beijing 2008 Games, where, interestingly, Tour de France sprint king Mark Cavendish - arguably the most accomplished of all the Team GB riders - was the only male member of the squad to go home empty handed. Individual events include the team pursuit, team sprint, the individual sprint, the keirin (which involves a pacing motorcycle, or derny) and, new to the Olympic programme, the omnium (which features riders competing across six disciplines). The stupendous Velodrome was built with the consultation of Sir Chris Hoy, who picked up a record three gold medals in Beijing.
