While 150-odd professional cyclists enter Paris to complete the gruelling three-week Tour de France on Saturday 26th July, a lesser-known but equally important bike ride takes place at the same time over here in Blighty. The annual London to Cambridge Bike Race, raising vital funds for Breakthrough Breast Cancer, sees around 3,000 riders cover 60 miles of picturesque roads through the beautiful English countryside. Starting at Pickett's Lock near Enfield and finishing at Midsummer Common in the heart of Cambridge, the race has now been running for more than a decade, proving a hit with competitors and spectators alike. Unlike the professionals, it's not the winning that counts and there are fabulous prizes for the top fundraiser and a special engraved team cup up for grabs for the top fundraising team - regardless of how quickly you peddle those miles. Applicants may enter online at www.bike-events.co.uk or email cycling@breakthrough.org.uk for an entry form.
