Louis Kahn: The Power of ArchitectureDespite having died penniless and having built relatively little in his lifetime, Louis Kahn (1901-1974) remains one of the most influential architects of the 20th Century. His modernist philosophies and monumental buildings still inspire new generations of architects today, and works such as the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California (1959-65) and the National Assembly Building in Dhaka, Bangladesh (1962-83) are considered among the most important works of the last century. This Design Museum exhibition is a comprehensive look at Kahn's work, featuring architectural models, drawings, travel sketches, photographs and film footage shot by Kahn's son Nathanial, whose 2003 film 'My Architect' is an attempt to understand his father. A four-metre-tall replica of the City Tower in Philadelphia (1952-57) is also being constructed on site. Louis Kahn remains the architect's architect and the exhibition is accompanied by tributes from international stars including Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano, Peter Zumthor and Sou Fujimoto.

About Design Museum

In 2016 the Design Museum moves from is long standing home at Shad Thames to a venue three times the size, the former Commonwealth Institute building in Kensington High Street. The Grade II* listed building has been transformed by a design team led by John Pawson to include the Swarovski Foundation Centre for Learning, 202-seat Bakala Auditorium and a dedicated gallery to display its permanent collection, accessible free of charge.
