Anna Christy stars as the bride in Donizetti's opera Lucia di Lammermoor based loosely on Sir Walter Scott's tragic novel The Bride of Lammermoor. Directed by David Alden, this dramatic Italian Romantic opera begins as Enrico plans to marry his sister Lucia (Anna Christy) to Arturo. But she is in love with Edgardo, her family's greatest enemy, and they become secretly engaged before he leaves for France. As one of the leading operas of the bel canto period, Lucia di Lammermoor is what grand tragic opera is all about; an emotionally-charged score guiding audiences through angst-ridden love affairs, angst-ridden divided loyalties and, not forgetting, that all-important 'I challenge thee to a duel' near the end. With the star-crossed lovers come obstacles to their love and subsequent heartbreak. One of the high points, quite literally, of the opera is Lucia's mad scene in Act III, which shows off the soprano's vocal technique in a strikingly impressive aria. Director David Alden has enjoyed success with his Olivier Award-winning 'Jenufa' and his 'Lucia di Lammermoor', staged here at the London Coliseum this time last year, is another wonderfully-executed production.
