Macbeth, one of Shakespeare's most grim and bloody tragedies, is the play which will open the Shakespeare's Globe season for 2010, entitled Kings & Rogues. This production, directed by Lucy Bailey, stars Elliot Cowan in the titular role, an actor who recently played Stanley in A Streetcar Named Desire opposite Rachel Weisz at the Donmar and whose screen credits include Mr Darcy in ITV's Lost in Austen. The play famously opens with the three witches who tell Macbeth he's destined to take the throne of Scotland. From that moment on the brutal, passionate ambition of Lord and Lady Macbeth leads to a trail of plotting, betrayal and bloodshed as they strive to make the prophesy come true. A note of warning if you want to buy standing tickets in the yard: the closer you stand to the stage, the more likely you are to be involved in the action.About Shakespeare's Globe Theatre
This replica of the Shakespeare's 16th century theatre, reconstructed just 200 yards from its original site, is the brainchild of American actor and director Sam Wanamaker.
