Make Do And Mend

Nearby Make Do And Mend

The old wartime motto 'Make Do and Mend' has come back into fashion in these thrifty times. Recycling and refurbishing things not only saves money but the environment too. To show just how relevant the 1943 rationing mentality is today the V & A Museum of Childhood presents the work of three contemporary designers - Jon Male, Lou Rota and Max McMurdo - who reuse domestic and industrial waste products. From broken shopping trolleys to grown-out-of jumpers, these designers have found a way of salvaging discarded goods into stylish new products. The Make Do and Mend exhibition features the pieces the designers made with the help of local schoolchildren from Arnhem Wharf, St John's and Redlands Primary Schools. Students from Tower Hamlets College also worked with the artists to produce their own whimsical versions of re-created domestic objects which are also on display.About V & A Museum of Childhood
The Museum of Childhood houses the UK's largest collection of toys including dolls, dolls' houses, puppets, games, and toys. Collections showcase all aspects of childhood, from games throughout the ages to a historical look at cots, prams and feeding bottles (including a 19th century ceramic bottle).
