Man Ray PortraitsOver 150 vintage Man Ray prints, including works never before exhibited in the UK such as studies of the American impersonator, high wire performer, and trapeze artist Barbette, Catherine Deneuve and Ava Gardner, can be seen at the National Portrait Gallery from 7th February 2013. Man Ray Portraits, the first major museum retrospective of the artist's photographic portraits, highlights the role Man Ray played in the Dada and Surrealist movements and examines his friendship with French artist Marcel Duchamp. Featuring photographs taken between 1916 and 1968, the exhibition shows Man Ray's revolutionary photographic techniques such as solarisation - evident in his own Self-Portrait with Camera - and experiments with colour in the 1950s. The exhibition reveals the wide variety of his subjects - famous stars, friends, lovers and contemporaries - and closes with his 1968 portrait of film star Catherine Deneuve in which she wears the twisted gold 'lampshade' earrings the artist designed.

About National Portrait Gallery

The National Portrait Gallery houses portraits of significant figures from the late 15th century to the present day. This isn't the place to come for serious works of exceptional artistic merit - the overriding aim of the National Portrait Gallery is to reflect the status of the sitter, not the artist - but where else in London could you hope to find The Beatles, Henry VIII, Sir Richard Branson and JK Rowling all hanging out together? The appeal of this gallery (opened in 1856) rests simply in its comprehensive commemoration of British history from the late 15th century to the present day through the medium of portraiture.
