Masterpieces of Chinese Painting 700-1900See some of the finest examples of Chinese painting at the Victoria & Albert Museum's autumn 2013 exhibition Masterpieces of Chinese Painting, the most comprehensive exhibition on the topic since 1935. Over 100 works from the beginning of the 8th to the end of the 19th century are brought together for this display which includes some of the earliest surviving Chinese paintings. Evolving themes and aesthetic preferences developed over the centuries are examined through rare works including figure paintings on silk for tombs and temples, and small-scale works by monks. A show of this scale and nature hasn't been seen in the UK since the International Exhibition of Chinese Art at the Royal Academy in 1935, the first time in history such a large amount of Chinese objects had been on loan to a foreign country. A reporter at the time commented, "China reveals itself as an influence comparable with Greece and Italy".
