Max Mara Art Prize for WomenThis biannual prize at the Whitechapel Gallery has been celebrating the aesthetic and intellectual contribution that women artists bring to contemporary art for over five years. Winning artists are presented with a unique opportunity to develop a new project during a fully funded six-month residency in Italy. Here, Laure Prouvost, the fourth winner of the prize, presents a body of short films and installations developed during her residency. Referencing Roman murals and the pleasures of Italy, Prouvost connects language and understanding, playing on the historic idea of visiting the Mediterranean for inspiration. The exhibition includes presentations by a shortlist of this year's entrants who talk through their plans should they be chosen for the Max Mara Art Prize.

About Whitechapel Gallery

Designed in a distinctive Arts and Crafts architecture style by Charles Harrison Townsend, the Whitechapel, Britain's first purpose-built arts gallery, is renowned both for the beauty of its light, airy space and for embracing the local community in its work. Founded in 1901, extensive refurbishment saw the gallery, reopened in April 2009, double in size. More about Whitechapel Gallery
