Michael Landy transforms the South London Gallery space into a large container where people can dispose of their art works destined for landfill. Only those works accepted by the artist or his representative and, over the course of the exhibition's six-week run the Art Bin will gradually fill up, resulting in 'a monument to creative failure'. If deemed worthy of chucking, pieces will join a bad Peter Blake and some works by Landy's fellow YBAs. A participant in the landmark Sensation exhibition at the Royal Academy, Landy once famously destroyed all his possessions in a former C & A store on Oxford Street. In that 2001 installation, 'Break Down', and through this new work he raises questions around issues of disposal, destruction, value and ownership.About South London Gallery
This is one of London's most important contemporary art exhibition spaces, having shown artists such as Gilbert and George, Tracey Emin, Mark Quinn and Julian Schnabel under David Thorp's directorship from 1992-2001. The South London Gallery (SLG) can trace its roots as far back as 1868 when South London Working Men's College opened at 91 Blackfriars Road. More about South London Gallery
