Mind the MapCovent Garden's London Transport Museum is putting on a new (free with entry to the main museum) exhibition called Mind the Map which explores the inspiration, history, design and creativity behind London transport maps. Opening on 18th May 2012, the exhibition includes previously unseen historic material and new artworks by leading artists including Stephen Walter, Susan Stockwell, Jeremy Wood, and Simon Patterson whose 1992 version of Harry Beck's iconic 1931 Tube map, The Great Bear, replaced the stations with names of famous people. The artwork spans from a 1887 Jubilee Edition district railway pocket map to a 2006 Tube map cover by Yinka Shonibare, whose Nelson's Ship in a Bottle was recently moved from The Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square to the National Maritime Museum. The largest exhibition of its kind to date, Mind the Map invites us to look at the relationship between identity and place, and explore the impact maps have had on our understanding of the city. Not only are they eyecatching, public and portable works or art but the maps also have a practical purpose - without them we would, quite literally, be lost.

About London Transport Museum

After a two-year, £22 million refurbishment the London Transport Museum reopened on 22 November 2007 revealing more exhibition space than before. The museum travels back through the 200-year history of public transport, arranged according to several themes: London Transport's famous design heritage, the poster collection, public transport during both World Wars and plans for the capital's development in the twenty-first century.
