The European premiere of Inoue Hisashi's comedy, Musashi, is based on real life, legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, who cut a swathe through early 17th century Japan. Celebrated director Yukio Ninagawa directs, returning to the Barbican Theatre following the sell out success of his Twelfth Night After William Shakespeare last year. Using the contemporary comedy elements of Noh and Kyogen and the spirit of the Samurai, this sometimes hilarious swordplay piece of theatre demonstrates the ultimate futility of seeking vengeance. Crossing swords are Tatsuya Fujiwara, one of Japan's most talented young actors (who made his career debut, aged 15, at the Barbican) starring in the title role and Ryo Katsuji (Japan Academy Award winner for Aegis, 2006) who plays his rival, Kojiro Sasaki. The comedy mixed with dramatic tension is enough to keep audiences entertained for a three and a half hour performance (in Japanese with English surtitles) which goes surprisingly quickly.About Barbican Centre
Described by the Queen as 'one of the wonders of the modern world' , the Barbican Centre has also been voted 'London's ugliest building'.
