The Musical Comedy Awards returns for a second year after the success of the inaugural event last year, won by versatile Aussie-English duo Adams and Rea. After a series of heats held over the first couple of months of the year, the five finalists will come head to head at the New Players Theatre for this showpiece grand final, which will include performances by established musical comedians such as Tom Basden, Pippa Evans, Ginger & Black and the reigning champions Sarah Adams and Leisa Rea. The genre is in fine fettle, as exemplified by the success of mainstream acts such as Flight of the Conchords (the self-proclaimed "formerly New Zealand's fourth-best folk parody duo"). Two of last year's finalists, chap-hop legend Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer and the twisted cabaret pop act Frisky & Mannish, have really broken through over the last year, the latter pair enjoying a sell-out show at Edinburgh followed by an international tour. Tonight's final is hosted by the founder of the dedicated 'Avin a Larf' musical comedy website, the affable Ed Chappel. For more details go to www.musicalcomedy.co.uk.
