Opening on Trafalgar Day (21st October 2013), Nelson, Navy, Nation is a new permanent gallery at the National Maritime Museum that looks at how the Royal Navy shaped individual lives and the course of British history over the 18th century. Bringing together more than 250 objects from the Museum's collections, the gallery takes visitors on a journey through the Glorious Revolution of 1688 to the defeat of Napoleon in 1815 and reveals how during this period the Navy became a greater focus of public life than ever before. With items such as Nelson's uniform from the Battle of Trafalgar, the last letter that he wrote to his daughter Horatia and one of the mourning rings worn by close friends and family at his funeral, Nelson is at the heart of the gallery and visitors can get a true sense of the 'Nelson mania' that swept the nation. Furthermore, in order to delve into every aspect of the naval story, the realities of sailors' live are explored through the display of personal possessions, a seven-barrelled volley gun that was used against the enemy and the amputation knife, bone saw and bullet forceps that were used by the surgeon.

About National Maritime Museum

Located in the heart of Greenwich, the National Maritime Museum has a monumental mission: to showcase mankind's association with the sea. The collection dates back to 1823 when a National Gallery of Naval Art was established, and the museum is housed in an elegant building which used to be an asylum.
