In the year he turns 95 years old, the life and work of Nelson Mandela is celebrated in a special evening of poetry and performance on Wednesday 18th September 2013 at the Southbank Centre's Queen Elizabeth Hall. In honour of the twenty-seven years he spent in prison on Robben Island, a group of leading writers, poets, performers and spoken word artists perform twenty-seven pieces. A celebration of the revolutionary change Mandela brought about in South Africa, The Long Walk to Freedom takes its name from his Mandela's 1994 autobiography. The book has also inspired a new film directed by British filmmaker Justin Chadwick and starring Idris Elba and Naomie Harris which opens in the UK on 3rd January 2014. Elba is already rumoured to be in line for an Oscar for his performance.
