The prospect of Nightmares on Wax live has the LondonTown.com team salivating. The leisurely beats are as fluid and laid-back as wax dripping from a candle in the early hours. Not to mention the novel live show which makes a Nightmares on Wax gig a unique experience. A lot of dance acts make a pretty disappointing attempt at a 'live' act - read: a geek dancing around pressing a few buttons on a laptop every five minutes. NOW thankfully pull it out of the bag.
The man behind NOW, George Evelyn, steps out from the shadow of the studio to conduct a large group of musicians who, rather than just play it straight, are encouraged to interpret the tunes in their own way. The interplay and improvisation is great for the performers who really play up to the jam scenario. It's great to see something new created right in front of you. Now and again Evelyn pops behind the decks to demonstrate his vinyl dexterity and they'll be guest vocalists to liven the crowd up.
Chilled hip hop seems so normal these days, in fact all these Chill compilations are practically bursting with it, but back in the early 90s hip hop was loud, energetic and angry. When NOW released their glorious debut Smoker's Delight it was a breath of fresh air. Make sure you catch this unsung hero and his brilliant take on the live music experience.
