'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' sees Shane Richie star as the extroverted and occasionally violent gambler, RP McMurphy, who fakes psychosis to avoid normal imprisonment. Set in the sterile confines of a US mental institution in the early 1960s, the play revolves around Randle's rebellion against the tyrannical regime of Nurse Ratched. Richie never exactly manages to eclipse memories of Jack Nicholson's scenery-chewing performance in the iconic film, but he has great presence and just the right kind of mildly unhinged charm for the role. With some great comic turns from the rest of the madhouse, this play was a genuine box office smash on its first run and is well worth a visit if you missed it in the West End.
