Opera fans will welcome the return of the Holland Park season, which stages rare gems and classic masterpieces in the heart of one of London's much-loved parks. Under the theatre's impressive canopy, audiences have the best of both worlds - they can soak up the al fresco atmosphere while being surrounded by opera's surging sounds. This year's repertoire promises to be as magical as ever and the season opens, as it did last year, with Verdi. This time his haunting epic 'Il Trovatore' takes to the stage for four acts of soaring emotion. There's the usual contingent of jealous lovers and murderous revenge but add a gypsy hell-bent on avenging her mother being burnt at the stake and there's a chillingly dark thread running through the story. There's a danger of it all turning to melodrama but Verdi's popular and tuneful score propels the action forward with a dramatic force that sees the characters inextricably caught in this web.
