Painting History: Delaroche and Lady Jane GreyThe Execution of Lady Jane Grey by Paul Delaroche is one of the most famous paintings in London's National Gallery. The painting showing a blindfolded Lady Jane about to be executed in the Tower Of London following her famously short-lived nine day rule is a highlight of the Painting History: Delaroche and Lady Jane Grey exhibition at the National Gallery. This, the first exhibition of 2010 at the gallery, aims to redress the balance for Delaroche, who once rivalled his contemporaries Ingres and Delacroix but who fell from favour soon after his death. An accompanying exhibition which you can see for free in Room 1 presents, for the very first time, Delaroches recently recovered 'Charles I Insulted by Cromwell's Soldiers', 1836, which was damaged by shrapnel in the bombing of Bridgewater House in London during the Blitz and is now held in a private collection.

About National Gallery

The National Gallery dominates London's Trafalgar Square with its neo-classical columns and portico designed by William Wilkins adjoining the square on its east side where it has been pedestrianised. Some of the finest examples of European art, ranging from 1260 to 1900, are included among the 2,300 paintings filling its halls and rooms. More about National Gallery
