Tony Award-winning producer and director Harold Prince (The Phantom of the Opera) co-directs Paradise Found, the latest musical to be staged at the excellent Menier Chocolate Factory, featuring an all-American cast. The musical is adapted from the novel Paradise Found by Viennese author Joseph Roth, and tells the story of the Shah of Persia (John Cullum) who travels to Vienna with his Eunuch (Mandy Patinkin) for some romantic adventures. It's in Vienna that the Shah falls in love with the empress of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the grounds for comic confusion are laid. Lyrics by Ellen Fitzhugh are set to music by Johann Strauss II, orchestrated by Jonathan Tunick, in this musical comedy which centres on the impotent Shah with 139 wives. Given the pedigree of the director Hal Prince and the recent successes of the Menier's productions of 'A Little Night Music' and 'La Cage aux Folles' - both of which transferred to the West End and are appearing on Broadway this year - this production promises to be a little bit of paradise.About Menier Chocolate Factory
Housed in a former chocolate factory, this innovative theatre is rapidly establishing itself as one of London's best. Since opening in 2004, it has had half-a-dozen West End transfers, most of them slick revivals of recent plays and musicals, including Sunday in the Park With George, Dealer's Choice, and Little Shop of Horrors.
