Patrick Monahan's ethnicity (half Irish, half Iranian, brought up in Newcastle) and his assured beginnings on the comedy circuit made him a star-in-the-making when he burst onto the scene in 2001. Given the name of his new show and his Middle Eastern roots, you'd expect Monahan to be a male Shazia Mirza - but nothing could be further from the truth. Despite his trademark opening gag about spending all his holidays in customs, there's little material in Monahan's routine to pin-prick his Persian provenance - nothing less than his accent, which is decidedly Geordie. In fact, so apolitical is his act that he changed its name from Cowboys and Indians to Feel the Love during the 2007 Edinburgh Festival for fear of misleading people hungry for a show based on Bush gags as Anglo-Iranian relations waned in the wake of the navel hostage crisis. Instead, the cheeky and cheerful Monahan uses a quiz from a women's magazine as a springboard for his "refreshingly personal" (Chortle) show at the Royal Albert Hall's new Elgar Room. Affable and garrulous, the teetotaller relies heavily upon audience participation and wins over the crowd with a rounded, wholesome display of stand-up material fit for all ages.About Royal Albert Hall
