Paul Nash: The ElementsPaintings and photographs by Paul Nash, English Surrealist and landscape painter, go on display at the Dulwich Picture Gallery including depictions of the Downs, surreal flooded rooms and images from his time as official artist to both World Wars. The exhibition brings together around sixty of his finest paintings and watercolours together with a selection of his own photographs and photographic collages. Lesser known interiors, abstracts and still lifes are here too, alongside landscapes which reflect his first hand experience of war. Nature was an inspiration for Nash who looked for 'equivalents' between differing elements, in a search for harmony between them. Through nature he explored the life cycle using the balance of design and colour within the natural world of sea, stone, earth and sky. Many of these paintings, particularly his later works, incorporate cosmic elements of sun and moon.

About Dulwich Picture Gallery
