Known better for his drug-fuelled brushes with the tabloids and beauty-and-the-beast-style relationship with Kate Moss, it's easy to forget that Pete - or Peter as he wishes to be called now - Doherty was, for a moment, the great white hope of British music. Alongside best friend Carl Barat at The Libertines, Doherty's stock rose as a poetic songwriter and a charismatic frontman - and then plummeted as quick as it took to stick a needle in his arm. Despite doing time behind bars for various drug and theft-related charges, Doherty managed to found Babyshambles, a group which showed glimpses of promise but was largely puerile and shambolic. But a new solo album and a rousing acoustic solo performance at this year's Glastonbury (including a crowd-stirring rendition of his hit Albion) suggest that Doherty is getting serious again. This gig at the Roundhouse should either back this up - or see the artist fall further off the wagon.
