Androgyny's favourite son Brian Molko brings his band Placebo to The O2 Arena for one night in December to promote their latest album Battle for the Sun. Born in the glam-friendly Brit-pop aftermath and heavily indebted to David Bowie, Suede and Nirvana, Placebo have really homed in on a niche (but indisputably huge) audience for catchy guitar riffs, tortured vocals and enduring angst. It goes down extremely well in Belgium, Germany and Switzerland - where Molko is deemed a god - and with more than 10 million worldwide album sales to their name, Placebo remain one of the most successful groups of their generation. Despite the addition of trumpet, saxophones and strings, the band's sixth album contains no real stylistic overhaul, and "Placebo remain very much the go-to power trio for all your industrial goth-rock needs" (The Times). 'Ashtray Heart', 'Happy You're Gone' and 'Kings of Medicine' contain the band's trademark classic sound and are right up there with old favourites 'Nancy Boy', 'Every You Every Me' and 'Pure Morning'. Expect a load of nail varnish, jet-black hair, whitened faces and lip gloss in what should be a cracking night for fervent fans.
