The Fan Museum, a delightful homage to bygone times when ladies fluttered these hand-held works of art, puts some of its most
spectacular models on display for Director's Choice, an exhibition which includes one elegant fan thought to have belonged to the Queen Victoria's mother, the Duchess of Kent. This fan which features a small watch within it is not the only one with a royal connection to be featured in this display. Among the seventeenth and eighteenth century fans shown in the first gallery is a jewelled fan carried by Princess Stephanie of the Belgians in 1881 when she married Prince Rudolph of Hapsburg, heir to the
Austro-Hungarian Empire, a wedding present from her aunt and uncle. Also on exhibition are marabou feather fans and painted fans kept in pristine condition, some still with the paper wrapped around alternate sticks to prevent the tortoiseshell from being worn away.
