Mark Haddon, best-selling author of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, has created his first work for the theatre with Polar Bears, a touching story about one man's struggle to love, support and live with someone suffering from a psychological condition. This Donmar production is directed by Jamie Lloyd (who won high praise for his staging of Piaf starring Elean Roger last year), tells the story of John and his love for Kay who has bipolar disorder so when the moon is in the right phase, she is magnetic and amazingly alive. But when the darkness closes in, she is lost to another world, a world in which John does not belong. Recent successes at the Donmar under the guidance of artistic director Michael Grandage have included A Streetcar Named Desire with Rachel Weisz, Life is a Dream with Dominic West and Hamlet starring Jude Law which transferred to Broadway. With Polar Bears, Grandage has secured yet another much-anticipated, sure to sell-out show with a bit of a buzz about it.About The Donmar Warehouse
Housed in an impressive red-brick industrial building - at various times a brewery, a banana warehouse and a film studio - this tiny repertory theatre is one of the great success stories of the 1990s. Created as a studio space for the RSC in 1977, it became a shabby but popular fringe theatre in the 1980s, a testing ground for producers with big ideas but little money.
