The second week of The Proms concludes with this Free Family Concert at the Royal Albert Hall aimed to whet the appetite of new and younger audiences with a first taste of classical music. When it comes to introducing novices to all the instruments of the orchestra there's little better than Britten's superb set of variations on a tune by Purcell, which concludes this matinee concert after the world premiere of another Britten-based piece, designed specially for the BBC Proms Family Orchestra. Before that, highlights include young Stravinsky's arrangement of a Chopin waltz for ballerinas and a performance by 19-year-old violinist Jennifer Pike (pictured), a former BBC Young Musician of the Year and one of Radio 3's current New Generation Artists, who performs a rarity by the British composer Holst.
