Another Henrik Ibsen revival to take to the stage at the Young Vic this year, 'Public Enemy' ? originally titled 'Enemy of the People' - is a story of corruption, pollution and courage. When he discovers that the waters of a new public spa are toxic, Dr. Stockmann expects gratitude and glory. Instead, he becomes the most hated man in town. With the townspeople desperate to keep the dirty secret of their most lucrative tourist attraction, how far will one man go to stand up for the truth? Ibsen wrote the play to address the irrational tendencies of the masses and point out hypocrisies within the political system of the time.
About The Young Vic
Knocked together out of breeze blocks for a minimal budget in 1970, Lawrence Olivier's experimental theatre was intended to last for five years, and provide an inspiration for the new generation of performers. But this was an experiment that worked and, years later, the Young Vic remains south London's premier venue for the contemporary, the shocking, the controversial, and the bizarre.
