The first play by an African American woman produced professionally, Rachel is a lost landmark of American theatre, revived at the Finborough for its European premiere - the first time it has been produced worldwide for nearly 100 years. Written between the American Civil War and the end of slavery, and the explosion of Civil Rights in the 1960s, Rachel tells the story of a young, educated, middle-class woman born into an African-American family in the early 20th century as she confronts the harsh reality of a racist world. Exciting young director Ola Ince returns to the Finborough Theatre where she directed the world premiere of Chris Dunkley's 'The Soft of Her Palm' in 2012. Rachel is part of Black History Month which also includes The Scottsboro Boys at the Garrick Theatre.

About Finborough Theatre

The Finborough Theatre in Earls Court punches well above its weight, presenting award-winning plays and works by new writers in a small theatre above a pub. Founded in 1980, the Finborough has just 50 seats creating an intimate space for its productions which focus on developing new writing, rediscovering neglected works and presenting the best of the old and new in an eclectic programme.
