Direct from his sold-out national tour, Rhod Gilbert, the self-styled Welsh Misery, makes his only London date this summer at the Southbank's E4 Udderbelly. Before he moves on to previewing his next show, the hilariously titled Rhod Gilbert and the cat that looked like Nicholas Lyndhurst, the feted 40-year-old from Carmarthen shoots through the rip-roaring material which earned him such rave reviews last year, be it at the Apollo, in Montreal or Sydney, entertaining the troops in Afghanistan or at the Royal Variety Show in front of the Prince of Wales, his "neighbour". With his bellowing voice and distinctive Welsh twang, Gilbert is renowned for having a pop at the imperfections and fakery of modern living - be it the logic of toilet-cleaning rotas, the provenance of service station mince pies that claim to be "award-winning" or the baffling system of duvet "togs" set against the supposed advantages of goose over duck-down stuffing. But Gilbert is at his best when parodying the Welshman and talking about his homeland - even if his show is now more refined from his early material about growing up in the fictional town of Llanbobl. "I wanted to be somewhere dryer than Wales," starts one gag. "So I joined the Navy. One night it stopped raining. You never forget that first dry dream." As The Independent says, Gilbert is "comedy manna from heaven".
