The singer and guitarist Richard Hawley performs at Somerset House as part of their outdoor Summer Series concerts this July. Sheffield through and through, Hawley ("the country's most accomplished songwriter" - The Telegraph) is the consummate collaborator, having left his mark on the Britpop era with both Longpigs and Pulp, and worked alongside the likes of Shirley Bassey, Elbow and Arctic Monkeys. Standing at the Sky's Edge, Hawley's seventh solo album, was released in May 2012 amid a cacophony of praise from the critics. A new psychedelic rock direction was "totally unexpected, and completely winning" according to The Independent, while BBC Music said the album was "the sound of Hawley cutting loose, and clearly enjoying it". Hawley's previous album, the wonderfully dreamy and delicate Truelove's Gutter, was billed "the record of Hawley's career" by The Guardian. After a glowing 5 star review for Standing on the Sky's Edge, which earned the musician a Mercury Prize nomination, the paper has had to search for fresh superlatives for his latest masterpiece. This Sunday night gig under the stars in Somerset House should be a real treat.
About Somerset House
Somerset House, once the site of a spectacular Tudor palace, now includes a magnificent 18th century art gallery housing celebrated collections belonging to the Courtauld Institute Gallery, as well as the Embankment Galleries (which replaced the Hermitage Rooms and The Gilbert Collection - the latter re-opened at the Victoria and Albert Museum in June 2009).
