Robert MapplethorpePhotographs and self-portraits by the avant-garde American artist Robert Mapplethorpe are the subject of a free display at Tate Modern, where the portraits will be shown for the first time. Mapplethorpe was renowned for pushing the boundaries of photography in both his subject choice and technique, resulting in a number of controversial and explicit gay imagery. This exhibition allows for these controversial works to be displayed alongside his complete repertoire. Part of the Artist Rooms displays, there will also be a room dedicated to Alex Katz (26th April 2014 - 1st March 2015), displaying a group of large landscape paintings

About Tate Modern

Located along the banks of the River Thames in the former Bankside Power Station, originally designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1947, the architect of Battersea Power Station, Tate Modern opened to great acclaim in 2000. Since then it has welcomed millions of visitors through its imposing doors. More about Tate Modern
