Rothko/Sugimoto: Dark Paintings and Seascapes, the inaugural exhibition at Pace London's new flagship gallery, pairs eight dark paintings of 1969 by Rothko and eight gelatin silver prints by Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto. In juxtaposing Rothko's black and grey paintings with Sugimoto's photographs of bodies of water, the exhibition invites viewers to explore the visual and conceptual affinities between the two. Sugimoto's recent creation of a limited edition of scarves for Hermes, part of the 'couleurs de l'ombre' exhibition showing in Basel, Brussels and Tokyo, and the result of a ten-year investigation into polaroid photographs and sunlight, shows striking similarities between the two. The London exhibition marks the first private gallery presentation of Rothko's work in the capital in nearly fifty years and marks a significant new gallery opening in a prominent Mayfair location.
