Royal Opera: Dialogues Des CarmelitesDirector Robert Carsen, who staged 'Falstaff' at the Royal Opera House in 2012, brings his award-winning production of Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmelites to Covent Garden this summer. The starkly beautiful staging of the opera set during the violent upheaval of the French Revolution combines modern design with period costumes and uses stunning lighting effects. There are contrasting scenes as hundreds of revolutionaries swarm the stage, followed by a scene of silent contemplation as Blanche, the timid daughter of an aristocrat, joins the Carmelite order of nuns, against the wishes of her family. The action culminates in one of opera's most devastating final scenes, as Blanche embraces death with her fellow nuns, to the hymn Salve Regina.

About Royal Opera House

This impressive building in the heart of Covent Garden has been playing host to major stars of the classical music world since 1858. The third theatre to be located on this site, today's Royal Opera House is the result of a reconstruction in the 1990s (although the main auditorium is part of the original building).
