Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2011: Peter ZumthorThe world-renowned Swiss architect Peter Zumthor is the 11th commission of the Serpentine Gallery's annual series this summer. Known for combining Modernism with minimalism, Zumthor presents a Pavilion which follows the concept of 'hortus conclusus' ? a contemplative room which boasts a garden within a garden and which will transport visitors far from the noise, traffic, smells, hustle and bustle of London. Set up in 2000, the Serpentine Pavilion project is the world's first and most ambitious architectural programme of its kind. This year, Zumthor ? the brains behind the famous Thermal Baths at Vals, Switzerland, and the Bruder Klaus Chapel in Mechernich, Germany ? will present his first completed building in the UK, a lightweight timber frame housing a specially created garden by the influential Dutch designer Piet Oudolf.

About Serpentine Gallery

Found in the middle of leafy Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park, there are two galleries that go by the name of The Serpentine, the original Serpentine Gallery, established in 1970, and the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, a 5 minute walk away across The Serpentine Bridge, was added in 2013.
