Architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, the duo behind leading Japanese practice SANAA, have been commission to design this year's Serpentine Gallery Pavilion. The ninth of the gallery's annual temporary pavilions to be erected in Kensington Gardens, this one, like last year's Frank Gehry structure, is their first realised project in the UK. However, they are no strangers to high profile commissions. Their work is highly sought after on a worldwide scale resulting in projects like the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, the Christian Dior building in Tokyo, and the Louvre Museum in Lens. Working together since 1995, the two architects have a clutch of prestigious prizes under their collective belt including the 'Gold Lion', awarded at the Venice Biennale in 2004. If their design for the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in rural Kanazawa - which won them the Venice award - is anything to go by, we can expect a structure which plays with light and perception made using the latest technical advances.
