Serpentine Pavilion 2018Now in its 18th year, the Serpentine's Summer Pavilion is a highlight of London's arts calendar in the summer, launched with a celebrity filled party on opening night. The site specific project tasks the chosen architecture - who must not have previously had one of their designs built in the UK - with creating a striking structure, temporarily erected outside the Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens. Designed by 17 architects since Zaha Hadid created the first in 2000, the commission is a honour and propels the chosen architect to greater public awareness. Built to house a cafe and a series of events, the Serpentine Pavilion is always worth making a detour for. This year, architect Frida Escobedo takes on the project, presenting an atmospheric courtyard-based design that draws on both the domestic architecture of Mexico and British materials and history.

About Serpentine Gallery

Found in the middle of leafy Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park, there are two galleries that go by the name of The Serpentine, the original Serpentine Gallery, established in 1970, and the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, a 5 minute walk away across The Serpentine Bridge, was added in 2013.
