It's ten years since the Serpentine Gallery started its summer Pavilion commission, a highlight of the summer arts scene in London, and French architect Jean Nouvel has been chosen to celebrate the landmark birthday. The gallery's annual temporary pavilions, erected next to the gallery in Kensington Gardens, are always much anticipated and this year's design - the architect's first completed building in the UK - is no exception. The bright red metal structure, with its bold geometric forms, certainly stands out. It "unapologetically screams its presence in the polite leafiness of Kensington Gardens" writes Steve Rose in The Guardian. Nouvel's high profile commissions include the Ima Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris and a branch of the Louvre in Abu Dhabi (due date: 2013) which illustrate his seemingly endless capacity for new ideas. For his Serpentine Gallery Pavilion - red to reflect London's traditional phone boxes, post boxes and buses - Nouvel has included a cafe, a 12 metre freestanding wall and outdoor ping pong tables. As in previous years, the galllery's programme of talks and events will be held at the Pavilion throughout the summer. About Serpentine Gallery
Found in the middle of leafy Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park, The Serpentine provides a platform for contemporary artists, both British and international, with frequent changing exhibitions. In July, the annual Summer Party is a highlight on the social circuit, attracting celebrities, fashionistas and models in the latest designer dresses. More about Serpentine Gallery
