| The Serpentine Pavilion is a bit like fantasy football league for architects. It's the one time they get to create a showpiece building that they most likely wouldn't get funding for otherwise. The results are often inspiring, inevitably controversial and the annual unveiling is always a delight. This year Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson and Norwegian architect Kjetil Thorsen have replaced last year's floating magical jellyfish with an altogether more rigid structure. The spiralling Pavilion which looks not unlike a snail's shell will act as a 'laboratory'. Every Friday night from September artists, architects, academics and scientists will lead a series of public experiments. The programme, conceived by Eliasson and Thorsen with the Serpentine, will end in a two-part, 48-hour marathon event exploring the architecture of the senses. Well worth a visit even if there's no special event on that day. |
