Shakespeare in LoveThis stage adaptation of the hugely popular film, Shakespeare in Love, is "the best British comedy since One Man, Two Guvnors", according to the Daily Telegraph. Directed and designed by Cheek by Jowl's Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod, it's a more earnest interpretation than its big screen predecessor with the scene set by Will Shakespeare struggling to pen another hit play. Enter young noblewoman, Viola De Lesseps, his muse and new love who not only cures him of his writer's block but also dresses as a boy and becomes one of the players in his latest production. This romantic comedy with music which transports the audience back to Shakespeare's London, is essentially the fictional backstory to the writing of Romeo and Juliet, with parts for Queen Elizabeth herself and a dog. If you like Shakespeare but wish it was a bit more lighthearted, you'll love this "witty and warm-hearted" "love letter to theatre itself" as Michael Billington writes in The Guardian.
