The magic of Shakespeare's Globe is not just a consequence of its Elizabethan beauty (though it is certainly one of the capital's most romantic summer spots). It also comes from the unique way the theatre works: with most of the audience standing mere inches from the stage there is a real sense of participation, and the crowds can be noisily appreciative. With standing tickets available for just a fiver, it is also one of the cheapest top class theatres in the world. This summer, the Shakespeare's Globe Season is called 'Kings & Rogues' and, appropriately enough, the 2010 programme begins with Macbeth - who could be described as both leader and a coward. There follows productions of Henry VIII, Henry IV (parts 1 and 2), Anne Boleyn and The Merry Wives of Windsor to complete the regal line-up. In September, with the staging of Nell Leyshon's Bedlam, history is made as the first female playwright gets to put on her play at the Globe. Whichever production you choose, it's a fantastic step into London's theatrical past, full of blood and thunder with the audience drawn deep into the action by imaginative staging.About Shakespeare's Globe Theatre
This replica of the Shakespeare's 16th century theatre, reconstructed just 200 yards from its original site, is the brainchild of American actor and director Sam Wanamaker. Built in wood and thatch, using techniques from 400 years ago, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre opened in 1996. More about Shakespeare's Globe Theatre
