The single most annoying thing about London's most famous shopping streets - the retail giants of Regent Street and Oxford Street - is the cars, taxis and buses trying to mow you down as you flit from Ted Baker to Topshop. Thankfully, for one day only, pedestrians get the VIP treatment - Very Important Pedestrians, that is - when these busy shopping streets are closed to traffic. By foot is the only way to travel on Saturday 5th December and what a pleasant change it makes too. No more dodging double deckers, no smoky fumes and no road rage motorists. The traffic stops at 10.30am and street entertainment goes on from 12 noon until 5pm, with the roads staying closed until 8pm. Happy shopping.About Regent Street
Don't be put off by the fact that Nash's sweeping design for Regent Street was inspired as a means of separating the riff-raff (Soho) from the well to do (Mayfair) back in the 1800s. Home to a number of large outlets offering everything from toys and trench coats to fabrics and food, Regent Street is a great place to window shop if nothing else. More about Regent Street
