Big-haired cynic Simon Amstell recently announced he was giving up Never Mind The Buzzcocks to concentrate on his live work. And so here he is, concluding his with two-month UK Tour with three back-to-back gigs in London at venues which include Shepherd's Bush Empire and the Royal Court Theatre. Far from the cerebral teaser of lesser-witted pop celebrities, a seemingly reclusive and angst-ridden Amstell shows a more tender side when alone with a microphone, exposing an "unexpected sensitivity" (The Guardian) lurking behind the trademark curly mop and acid-tongued put-downs. His inimitable interviewing and presenting style saw him catapult to stardom on our small screens, but his live act couldn't be further from his TV persona, and sees the 29-year-old turn his best weapons on himself. "Intellectually sophisticated, engagingly honest, genuinely accomplished stand-up" says The Scotsman, while The Sunday Times adds: "As close as you can get to a man emotionally and philosophically disembowelling himself on stage."
